Sidelines & Sacrifice: A Soccer Parent’s Guide to Long Weekend Tournaments

Sidelines & Sacrifice: A Soccer Parent’s Guide to Long Weekend Tournaments

As a military retiree spouse, Memorial Day Weekend has always meant more than a day off or a BBQ - it's a time to honor those who served and sacrificed.

At the same time, if you’ve got a soccer player, you also know what Memorial Day often brings: a multi-day tournament packed with games, travel, gear, emotions, and the occasional hotel pizza party.

So here’s your real-talk survival guide for soccer parents navigating the chaos, joy, and everything in between during long tournament weekends.

1. Hotels, Airbnbs & Hallway Hangouts

Tournament lodging is its own sport. Booking early helps, but even then, you might end up crammed into a double room with wet socks drying on every surface.

Some tips from experience:

  • Request a mini fridge for snacks and recovery drinks.
  • Bring games or cards.
  • Set boundaries for lights-out.

2. Embrace the Hurry Up & Wait

Long weekend tournaments often mean you’re either rushing to a field or stuck waiting hours between games. Here’s how to use that time:

  • Grab meals together as a team (bonus: builds chemistry).
  • Encourage light stretching or downtime.
  • Chat with other parents — some of your best sideline friendships will start here.

3. Packing Like a Pro

If you forget it, you’ll need it. If you bring it, someone else will forget it and be grateful. Tournament parent logic.

Must-haves:

  • Extra uniforms, socks, and cleats
  • Blanket or foldable chairs (yes, bring your own shade too)
  • First aid kit
  • Portable phone charger
  • Snacks — for them and for you (hangry parents are real)

4. Your Sideline Energy Counts

Tournament weekends are emotional. Wins, losses, frustration, and fatigue all come into play. One of the best things you can offer is a calm, encouraging presence.

You don’t have to be the loudest cheerleader. Just being there — steady, supportive, and snack-ready — is enough.

5. A Note on Memorial Day

For military families like ours, this weekend is never just about sports. While we cheer on our kids, we also remember the meaning behind the day. So yes, you’re at a soccer tournament, but it’s okay to hold space for both pride in your player and reflection on those who gave all.

Final Thoughts

Long weekend tournaments will test your patience, your packing skills, and your kid’s ability to find their cleats every single game. But they also offer unforgettable moments: bonding with other families, watching your athlete grow, and creating memories that outlast any trophy.

So take a deep breath, embrace the chaos, and know you're doing more than just "getting through it" — you're part of something your child will remember for life.
